Crystals can they really help? - Anxiety, Stress, Autism & more

Updated: Apr 25, 2020

In Australia it is estimated that 45% of the Australian population will experience some form of mental illness over their lifetime. Furthermore, ADHD diagnoses are 1 in 20 (for children) and Autism diagnoses are 1 in 70 with boys more likely to be diagnosed that girls for either diagnosis. Unfortunately, there are concerns that both ADHD and Autism rates appear to be increasing, this could be due to improved diagnostic procedures or other factors at play which have yet to be confirmed in the current medical or scientific community with guidelines and peer reviewed studies (retracted or otherwise).

That’s all pretty horrific right? For this reason, I would like to express the absolute importance of seeking out medical and psychological advice or support if you or your child is experiencing mental health concerns. Do NOT simply rely on the use of crystals. However, crystals can often be used to complement yourself or your child alongside support that you will hopefully already be receiving.

Stones and crystals are believed to help with various aspects of stress, depression and even anxiety, with each stone supporting the user in different ways. In fact, crystals have been used throughout history to support physical, psychological and spiritual well-being. However, it is important to be aware that crystals for healing purposes (physical, psychological, or spiritual) have not been studied in terms of scientific peer reviewed studies and evidence. The only information that is available in terms of the effectiveness or use of crystals is from the plethora of anecdotal evidence provided by the many people who have used crystals throughout history and speak so highly of the crystal properties. It is important to do your own research and form your own opinions on the use of crystals; however, they should not be used in the place of medical assistance. If you are seeking a crystal to support yourself or your loved one on the mental health journey embarked upon and have the additional supports you need in place this article may help you to source the perfect crystal/s to provide you with the possible additional benefits of the crystal/s on that journey.

Before we start I would like to mention one very important crystal to have in your toolkit regardless of the issues you are experiencing or journey that you are on, and that is ‘Clear Quartz’. The reason for this is because Clear Quartz is regarded to be a ‘master healer’ and an ‘all-purpose’ crystal as it can be used to cleanse other crystals, charge other crystals, provide an additional boost to the powers of other crystals you have, and it can also temporarily be used in-place of almost any other crystal when you are missing or can’t find a particular crystal. In addition, it is believed to help stimulate the immune system, balance the body, aid concentration, aid memory, connect the user with his/her/their higher self and remove negative energy from the body or room it is located. Therefore, this crystal is the number one must have for ANYONE utilising crystals. After sourcing the master healer crystal it becomes important to find out what you are needing assistance with and then researching which crystals provide what properties. Once you have done this it is best to go to a place that you can physically touch and hold the crystals letting your intuition choose which is best. Your body will generally guide you or your loved one to the crystal you or they need. Without further ado here is a small compiled list – full list is located within my ebook ‘Crystals forMental Health’.

Sodalite – This stone is also referred to as the “stone of peace” it is believed to assist the user in calming the mind, restoring emotional balance, trust in ones-self and promoting rational thoughts. The stone is believed to be particularly helpful in those who struggle to express themselves effectively or at all with its often-touted ability to stimulate self-expression, self-confidence, self-worth, self-acceptance, and self-esteem. It is also believed to encourage the users to be true to themselves, stand up for their own beliefs, connection with their intuition, utilise logic and trust within their own judgement. Emotional balance is also said to be achieved with the use of this stone through the release of past conditioning or programming which no-longer exist to serve and support the individual having difficulties. It is also believed to help increase the users confidence, encourage positive thought processes and tendencies while also decreasing negative ones, encourage optimism, motivation, clarity, joy, wonder, enthusiasm and relieve anxiety, depression or phobias. It is believed to support the user through situations that may be overwhelming, assist with processing difficulties, and support those who have difficulties with dyslexia. It is believed to have been utilised as far back as the middle ages to treat psychological and physiological concerns. However, it is important to be aware that like many other crystals and stones there were no clinical trials. I am also not aware of any peer reviewed studies on the use of gold, just like many other crystals or stones listed in this article any information or evidence available is merely anecdotal. Gold is connected to the heart chakra, third eye chakra, and crown chakra.

Prehnite – this stone is great for those who struggle with learning difficulties or struggle with learning due to other issues including but not limited to ADHD. It is believed to help the user to improve their focus and concentration, promotes a feeling of calm, alertness and alleviating the users worry, self-doubt or other negative emotions that may be negatively impacting on their learning or overall psychological well-being. It is connected to the heart chakra and solar plexus.

Ultimately, those who struggle with a mental health concern or have a loved one who struggles from this could find that crystals offer the additional support they need on their journey. However, the evidence to support the use of crystals is still only anecdotal with little to no clinical trials or peer reviewed studies available on many crystals. At this point the only way to find out if they will work for you would be to research which crystals properties fit your needs and then try them out. If you would like to know more about the use of crystals for mental health (particularly for autism, adhd, depression and anxiety) make sure you check out my ebook Crystals for Mental Health.
